How Many Pages Does a Small Business Website Need?

Small business owners often worry that a website with only a handful of pages looks thin. In practice, the opposite is true. A focused five-page site that answers visitors' questions quickly usually beats a sprawling one that makes them hunt.

The five-page starter site

Most small businesses can cover everything essential with five pages.

  • Home: who you are, what you do and the one action you want visitors to take.
  • Services (or Products): a clear description of what you sell, with prices or price ranges where you can.
  • About: the people behind the business and why customers should trust you.
  • Contact: phone, email, address if you have one, opening hours and a simple form.
  • A fifth page that fits your business: pricing, portfolio, FAQs or a location page.

Add a blog on top and you have a site that can grow without a rebuild.

When to add more pages

More pages help when each one has a distinct job. Good reasons to add a page:

  • You offer several different services and each deserves its own explanation.
  • You serve more than one town and want to be found in each.
  • Customers keep asking the same questions, so an FAQ page will save everyone time.
  • You have case studies or reviews that prove your work.

Poor reasons to add a page: padding, copying competitors, or creating several pages that all say roughly the same thing. Search engines struggle to tell near-duplicate pages apart, and visitors lose patience.

One page per job

A useful test is to write down what each page is for in a single sentence. If two pages have the same sentence, merge them. If a page needs two sentences, it probably wants splitting.

Do not forget the boring pages

Privacy policy, terms and a cookie notice are not exciting, but they matter. If your site collects enquiries or uses analytics, you need them. They are usually small pages, so they do not count against your plan in a meaningful way.

Mobile first

Most visitors will arrive on a phone, so plan your pages for small screens first. Short sections, clear headings and obvious buttons beat long walls of text.

Where to start

If you are unsure, start with five pages and a blog, publish, and look at what people actually click on. Our pricing starts at five pages and a blog for exactly this reason: it is enough to get going, and every extra page can be added later at a fixed price.
