Your domain name is your address online. It appears on cards, vans, emails and search results, so it is worth choosing carefully.
.ie or .com?
A .ie domain signals clearly that you are an Irish business, which can build trust with local customers. A .com is more international and is often the first thing people try typing. Many businesses register both and point one at the other.
- .ie: strong local signal, ideal if you mainly serve Ireland. Registration requires a connection to Ireland, which the registry checks.
- .com: familiar and widely recognised, useful if you also trade abroad.
If you can afford both, register both. That protects your name and avoids confusion.
What makes a good domain
- Short and easy to say. If you have to spell it out on the phone, it is too hard.
- Easy to type. Avoid awkward spellings, hyphens and numbers.
- Relevant. It should hint at your business or match your trading name.
- Not too narrow. A name tied to one product or town can limit you later.
Check before you commit
- Search the name to see who else uses something similar.
- Check social handles are available.
- Check there is no trademark conflict.
- Say it aloud and imagine it on a van.
Use a professional email address
An address like info@yourbusiness.ie looks far more credible than a free webmail account and is easy to set up once you own the domain.
Keep control of your domain
Register the domain in your own name or your company's, with your own contact details, not your agency's. Turn on auto-renew and keep the login safe. Losing a domain you forgot to renew is an avoidable disaster.
Do not rush
Spending an hour on the name saves headaches later. If you are unsure, we are happy to talk it through when we scope your site.
